BOOK REVIEWS

THE HALL

“There is no better tour guide than Shea...”

Deck the Shelves with these Hockey Books Toronto Sun (December 19, 2018)

“The Hall of Fame's new Book, The Hall, is absolutely incredible. I love that the museum’s released a very balanced and complex view of their own history, recognizing the grand successes as well as the multiple challenges that they encountered over the years.

I was really happy to see insightful acknowledgements of the transition from Kingston to Toronto, recognition of Ted Lindsay's refusal to attend in 1966, and dwelling on that numerous selections have been contested and debated (Busher Jackson and Doug Harvey, for example).

I was most impressed that so much space was dedicated to Alan Eagleson and Gil Stein. Having read through numerous official Hall of Fame literature, I know what a tough and difficult era both of those situations both the Hall into. I was glad that these issues were not only addressed, but that Kevin Shea connected these struggles to forcing changes and adaptations that have led to the autonomy and success that the Hall of Fame now enjoys.

One of my favourite aspects of the book was the chronological listing of Honoured Members in the back, and especially the use of their image from their glass panels. It is an extremely classy and clean ending to such an elegant book.

I truly believe it is the most iconic and extensive book ever released by the Hockey Hall of Fame.”

Jeffrey Griffith, Doctoral Candidate  (September 24, 2018)

“The book is more than just stunning photos of hockey’s most famous museum”

Jared Book, Habs Eyes on the Prize (September 14, 2018)

“Since its inception, the Hockey Hall of Fame’s treasures have served as the unsung heroes to hockey historians and been the stars of countless hockey books, films, special projects and celebrations. Now, upon the 75th anniversary of the institution loved by hockey participants and fans everywhere, it is most fitting that the great celebrator of hockey rightly becomes celebrated itself in its own glorious book. The Hall took me back to my first visit to the Hall at the old CNE grounds as a child, filled in the story for me about how that first wondrous hockey shrine came to be, and artfully chronicled the amazing journey it has taken to its current stature – physically at Young and Front streets in Toronto and spiritually in the collective hearts of the hockey world.”

Jason Farris, accomplished hockey researcher, publisher, and team executive who has been a long-time collaborator with, and supporter of, the Hockey Hall of Fame. (August 31, 2018)

“The book is billed as “A stunning hardcover book that features dramatic and compelling imagery and uncovers the fascinating history of the Hockey Hall of Fame.” It is rare that anything lives up to that type of hype, but this book truly does.”

Joe Pelletier, GreatestHockeyLegends.com (August 15, 2018)

“As to be expected from Kevin Shea and the Hockey Hall of Fame, it’s magnificent, a fabulous tribute to all that makes hockey’s shrine a many-times must-visit.”

Dave Stubbs, National Hockey League columnist and historian (August 3, 2018)
